Nalbari, July 24: For many residents, the nostalgia of waiting in line for tickets at Bharatiya Talkies is a distant memory. Once a vibrant center for culture and entertainment, this iconic cinema has been shuttered for years, leaving the district without a contemporary theatre.
For many years, Bharatiya Talkies was the go-to place for film enthusiasts, with new releases attracting large crowds and families enjoying evenings at the cinema. Now, the neglected structure stands as a testament to a waning cultural legacy.
While a small cinema has opened about four kilometers away, locals express that its limited seating and distance from the town center make it less accessible, particularly for families.
The recent success of Assamese singer-actor Zubeen Garg's latest film has reignited the community's desire for a modern cinema, as it has filled theatres across Assam. Residents believe that had Bharatiya Talkies been operational, Nalbari would have experienced a similar celebratory atmosphere.
"Cinema transcends mere entertainment; it fosters a shared cultural bond among people," remarked a local, reminiscing about how families have cherished the theatre experience for generations.
Despite the rise of streaming services, many in the community assert that nothing can replicate the thrill of watching films on a large screen.
As Nalbari continues to grow as an educational, commercial, and cultural hub attracting numerous visitors, residents argue that the town merits a centrally located, modern cinema equipped with comfortable seating, state-of-the-art audio-visual technology, air conditioning, and sufficient parking facilities.
They also believe that a multiplex could invigorate the local economy by drawing in restaurants, cafés, and other businesses around the cinema.
Reflecting the community's feelings, Binod Malakar, Secretary of the Nalbari District Student Union, stated that Bharatiya Talkies was once a vital part of the town's cultural fabric. He fondly recalled how schoolchildren were often taken there for special screenings on Independence Day and Republic Day.
"Experiencing films at Bharatiya Talkies was always memorable. Sadly, no governmental body has taken significant action to restore it. We urge the authorities to renovate the old building into a modern cinema hall so that the people of Nalbari can once again enjoy films on the big screen," Malakar added.
Residents are calling on both the government and private investors to either revitalize the Bharatiya Talkies site or create a new, state-of-the-art cinema in the heart of Nalbari.
