Re-voting Ordered for All Polling Stations in Falta, West Bengal
Election Commission Mandates Re-voting
On Saturday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that re-voting will take place at all 285 polling stations in the Falta assembly constituency. This decision follows reports of electoral malpractice during the second phase of voting on April 29.
Details of the Re-voting Process
The re-voting is scheduled for May 21, from 7 AM to 6 PM. The counting of votes cast during this re-voting will occur on May 24, while the counting for all other constituencies will take place on May 4. Additionally, the Election Commission has ordered re-voting at 15 polling stations in the Diamond Harbour and Magrahat West assembly areas, where previous votes were annulled.
What Happened in Falta?
Throughout the day, local residents protested in Falta, accusing Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers of intimidation and violence. Many individuals, including women, expressed their concerns for safety, with some publicly stating they felt harassed.
77 Complaints Filed During the Second Phase
The Election Commission received 77 complaints regarding tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the second phase of voting. In some instances, tape was placed over EVM buttons or ink was used to obscure them, preventing voters from casting their ballots. The results for all seats will be announced only after the re-voting in Falta.
Tensions Between BJP and TMC Over EVMs
Mamata Banerjee has been vocal in her criticism of the central government regarding EVMs. She has accused the Election Commission of colluding with the central government to manipulate the elections. Reports indicate that TMC workers are guarding the strong room where the EVMs are stored. The election results are set to be declared on May 4.
