Re-Elections Announced for West Bengal Assembly Seats

On May 2, re-elections will take place at 15 polling booths across two assembly constituencies in West Bengal. This announcement was made by the Election Commission on Friday. According to the notification, voting will occur at 11 booths in the Magrahat West assembly constituency and 4 booths in the Diamond Harbour assembly constituency.

The Election Commission invalidated the voting that took place on April 29 under Section 58(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, based on reports from the respective returning officers and observers from the Magrahat West and Diamond Harbour constituencies. Consequently, re-elections are set for May 2.

Allegations of Fraud by BJP

Voting at these booths will occur from 7 AM to 6 PM on Saturday. It is noteworthy that the BJP has accused these polling centers of significant electoral fraud, which fall under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency. Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of TMC, is the sitting MP from this area. Following these allegations, the Election Commission dispatched special observer Subrata Gupta to investigate the claims on the ground.

Opposition Leader Expresses Satisfaction with EC's Decision

Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent leader of the BJP and the leader of the opposition in the assembly, stated that there was electoral manipulation at several booths to benefit the TMC. He expressed satisfaction with the Election Commission's decision to conduct re-elections.

Kunal Ghosh Criticizes BJP's Demands

On the other hand, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh remarked, 'The BJP is aware that it will face a significant defeat in Diamond Harbour and Magrahat. This is why they are demanding re-elections in these areas. With the help of the Election Commission, the BJP is forcing the local populace to undergo the entire voting process again. The mandate is against the BJP, and it will remain so.'
