Overview of West Bardhaman District

West Bardhaman, one of the newest districts in West Bengal, is recognized as a significant economic hub within the state. Established on April 7, 2017, it stands as the 23rd district of West Bengal. The area is rich in industries and mining centers, providing ample employment opportunities for its residents. The district's name is often associated with the 24th Jain Tirthankara, Vardhaman, and its political dynamics are unique, with Asansol serving as the district headquarters.

Political Dynamics in West Bardhaman

Historically, West Bardhaman has been a stronghold for leftist parties. However, since 2011, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has gained prominence, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made attempts to establish a foothold. Currently, the TMC maintains a robust position, with the BJP striving to make an impact in the upcoming assembly elections.

Electoral Overview

The district comprises two Lok Sabha constituencies: Asansol and Bardhaman-Durgapur. Shatrughan Sinha represents Asansol for the TMC, while Kirti Azad Jha serves as the MP for Bardhaman-Durgapur. In the state assembly, there are nine seats, with the BJP holding three and the TMC dominating six. The Congress party has seen a decline in influence here. Asansol is divided into two subdivisions: Asansol Sadar and Durgapur, and the district includes eight blocks, two municipal corporations, and 62 gram panchayats.

2021 Election Results

In the 2021 assembly elections, the TMC secured victories in six out of the nine seats, while the BJP won three. The leftist parties and Congress faced significant setbacks. Although the BJP attempted to strengthen its presence in urban areas, it did not achieve the desired results.
