Gangtok, Oct 16: The recent appointment of Dushyant Gautam as Sikkim's Governor has sparked significant political unrest in the region. Opposition figures, student groups, and activists are calling on President Droupadi Murmu to reconsider this decision.

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader, has urged the President to delay Gautam’s appointment until the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concludes its investigation into the 2022 murder of Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand, amid allegations connecting Gautam to the case.

Gandhi emphasized the need for a pause to ensure justice and maintain public trust in the constitutional office.

Political activist Pravin Sharma has also reached out to the President, requesting that the appointment be withdrawn or reconsidered until the allegations are properly investigated.

Sharma warned that moving forward with the appointment without addressing these concerns could damage public confidence in the integrity and accountability of constitutional institutions.

He stated that his appeal was made in the interest of the public and in support of Bhandari’s family, who are seeking justice.

The situation escalated in New Delhi, where Bhandari’s parents were briefly detained after protesting against Gautam’s appointment at India Gate. Following their release, Bhandari’s mother was visibly emotional during a press briefing.

Activist Yogita Bhayana, who was with the family in Delhi, cautioned that protests would escalate if their demands were not met by Friday.

The appointment has faced harsh criticism in Sikkim, with political leaders and youth organizations questioning the decision and demanding accountability.

Komal Chamling, vice-president of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Chelli Front, challenged the state’s political leaders on their stance regarding this issue.

“In a time when women's safety and justice require our collective focus, where do our leaders stand?” she questioned.

Youth leader Prakash Lee also condemned the appointment, asserting that Sikkim’s dignity and identity must be honored.

“Sikkim is not a dumping ground for controversy,” Lee stated, emphasizing the state's dignity, identity, history, and self-respect.

The Sikkim University Students’ Association (SUSA) has voiced its concerns, highlighting the constitutional protections afforded to Governors under Article 361 and calling for increased transparency.

In contrast, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay has expressed support for Gautam’s appointment, congratulating him and hoping for his guidance in advancing Sikkim’s development.

Gautam has firmly denied any allegations related to the Bhandari murder case and has obtained a temporary court order from the Delhi High Court to prevent the spread of defamatory statements against him.

Despite his denials and the court ruling, critics continue to argue that the appointment should be reconsidered until the allegations are thoroughly investigated by the relevant legal authorities.
