Guwahati, Sept 8: The upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll is evolving into a multi-faceted contest, with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) joining the race alongside the BJP, Congress, and AIUDF as of Tuesday.
Following the Election Commission's announcement of the election schedule, the Assam TMC has put forward Dhing College's vice-principal, Prof Abdul Salam, as its candidate, adding a fresh element to the electoral landscape.
During the announcement, Assam TMC president and Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed stated that Salam met all party criteria and has made notable contributions to the community.
“His integrity, honesty, and dedication to society are unquestionable,” Ahmed remarked.
The party plans to focus its campaign on critical issues such as riverbank erosion, land rights, and the increasing costs of agriculture.
Ahmed expressed that Nagaon has not received sufficient representation in Parliament and that the TMC aims to effect noticeable changes during the remaining four years of the Lok Sabha term.
He identified the BJP as the main competitor and highlighted that former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would play a significant role in challenging the saffron party.
Additionally, he criticized the Congress for assuming voter support regardless of the candidate and claimed that the AIUDF has lost ground due to its perceived closeness to the BJP.
As the September 16 deadline for nominations approaches, tensions have escalated between Congress and AIUDF regarding the by-election.
AIUDF candidate Rejaul Karim Sarkar accused Congress of compelling voters to return to the polls and claimed that former Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi failed to adequately represent constituents' issues in the national arena.
Sarkar further alleged that Congress treats minority communities merely as a vote bank and has not effectively tackled issues like land rights, erosion, employment, and the NRC process.
“This time, voters will completely reject Congress,” he asserted.
Conversely, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi expressed optimism about his party's chances, stating they are “100% confident” of winning.
“The Congress will announce its candidate after discussions with the All India Congress Committee,” he added, noting that the BJP remains the primary adversary.
Previously, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that the BJP aims to maintain its influence in four Assembly segments within the Nagaon parliamentary constituency, while admitting that an “easy win” is not anticipated.
With four parties now gearing up for the contest, the Nagaon by-election promises to be a fiercely competitive affair.
