Intensifying Political Tensions Ahead of West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026
Political Climate Heats Up in West Bengal
As the second phase of voting for the West Bengal Assembly elections in 2026 approaches, the political atmosphere is charged with tension. Violent clashes between political factions have erupted in the Howrah and North 24 Parganas regions, escalating the situation. In Howrah, supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) engaged in a fierce shouting match that escalated into physical confrontations, prompting security forces to intervene forcefully. Notably, a roadshow led by actor Ravi Kishan took place in Howrah.
Voting Schedule and Results Announcement
The West Bengal Assembly elections will see voting across a total of 294 seats. The first phase, which took place on April 23, covered 152 of these seats. The second phase is scheduled for April 29, where voters will cast their ballots for the remaining 142 seats. The results of this election are set to be announced on May 4.
Clashes Erupt During Roadshow
The unrest began during a roadshow supporting BJP candidate Umesh Rai in North Howrah. As the procession, led by actor and MP Ravi Kishan, approached the TMC office on GT Road, chants erupted from both sides. TMC supporters shouted 'Jai Bangla,' while BJP workers responded with 'Jai Shri Ram.' The situation escalated quickly, necessitating a baton charge by central forces to restore order. However, by the time the clashes occurred, Ravi Kishan's convoy had already moved past the area.
Violence in Harua Leaves Officer Injured
Another significant incident of violence occurred in Harua, North 24 Parganas, where a confrontation broke out between supporters of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) and TMC workers returning from a rally led by ISF leader Naushad Siddiqui. Tensions flared after provocative remarks from TMC supporters, leading to a face-off. In the attempt to quell the disturbance, a police sub-inspector sustained injuries. Both ISF and TMC have claimed that their supporters were injured during the altercation.

According to the latest figures from the Election Commission, the first phase of voting recorded an impressive turnout of 93.19%, marking the highest voting percentage in any state since independence. Cooch Behar district led with a turnout of 96.2%, while Kalimpong recorded the lowest at 83.04%.
