Dhubri, July 14: The death of a 35-year-old woman after an alleged unauthorized abortion has prompted Dhubri Police to shut down an illegal abortion clinic that was operating out of a residential property. Authorities claim that the procedure was performed by a nurse masquerading as a gynaecologist.
Law enforcement has taken into custody the accused, Habiba Yasmin, a nurse affiliated with Dhubri Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), along with her spouse, Mostafizur Rahman.
A case has been filed (Dhubri Police Station Case No. 262/2026) under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 61(2), 319(2), 105, 90(2), 238(a), and 3(5), along with other relevant legal provisions.
The arrests were made following a complaint lodged by Hazrat Ali from Jawpara Part-II under Gauripur Police Station. In his report, Ali claimed that his wife, Maleka Bibi (35), passed away after receiving treatment from a woman who falsely claimed to be a qualified gynaecologist.
In response to the complaint, the District Crime Team, in collaboration with Dhubri Police, conducted a raid at the residence and confiscated medicines, medical instruments, and other items believed to have been used for illegal abortion procedures.
Investigators have indicated that initial findings suggest Yasmin had been impersonating a gynaecologist and performing Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) procedures without the necessary qualifications or legal permissions.
According to the FIR, Hazrat Ali and his wife visited DMCH on June 7 due to Maleka's severe abdominal pain.
Upon entering the hospital, they were allegedly approached by a woman who claimed to know a reputable gynaecologist and convinced them to follow her to a house in Rowra Part-II.
"As we entered the DMCH premises, a lady approached us and inquired about our issue. After learning about my wife's stomach pain, she assured us she knew a good gynaecologist and urged us to accompany her," Ali recounted in his complaint.
The couple was taken to the residence, where another woman introduced herself as a gynaecologist and requested Rs 8,000 for the treatment.
"They demanded Rs 8,000, which I paid in cash. After that, both women took my wife inside for treatment, and she remained there throughout the night. I waited outside on the veranda," the complainant stated.
According to the FIR, Maleka was discharged the next morning with a handwritten prescription. However, she soon began experiencing severe abdominal pain and was unable to walk.
"Once we left the house, my wife started complaining of intense stomach pain and could not walk. When I informed the woman doctor about her condition, she reassured me that it would improve in a few days," Ali mentioned.
The complainant alleged that despite multiple attempts to reach out to the woman in the following days, he received no response.
