Saikia's Letter to the Chief Minister-Designate
Guwahati, May 11: Debabrata Saikia, the former Leader of the Opposition in Assam's Legislative Assembly, extended his congratulations to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister-designate, following the BJP's success in the recent Assembly elections. In his correspondence, Saikia emphasized the need for immediate action on several pressing issues affecting the state, particularly the execution of the Assam Accord and the identification and removal of illegal immigrants.
In his letter, Saikia expressed optimism that under Sarma's leadership, Assam would experience growth, sustainable development, and a peaceful environment.
While acknowledging Sarma's new role, Saikia highlighted various long-standing and sensitive issues that require prompt attention from the incoming government.
Key among Saikia's requests was the enforcement of the Assam Accord and the urgent need to address the presence of illegal infiltrators in the state.
He also called for expedited efforts to grant Scheduled Tribe status to six indigenous communities within Assam.
Saikia pointed out that the election period had fostered division and animosity among various communities, tribes, and linguistic groups in the state. He urged Sarma to implement strong measures to restore communal harmony and promote collaboration among all segments of Assamese society for the state's advancement.
Additionally, the Congress leader referenced the ongoing investigation into the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, urging the government to provide full support to the family to expedite the inquiry.
In a significant proposal, Saikia advocated for the creation of an automobile manufacturing hub in Assam, asserting that such a venture would meet the aspirations of the state's unemployed youth and generate substantial job opportunities.
Saikia concluded his letter by wishing Sarma a successful term characterized by public welfare, development, and communal harmony in Assam.
