Guwahati, Oct 9: In the ongoing vote counting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, BJP's Devashish Sharma is currently ahead by a significant margin of over 43,418 votes against his closest competitor, Badruddin Ajmal, the leader of AIUDF, according to officials.
Sharma, who previously served as an IAS officer, has received 92,345 votes, while Ajmal has garnered 48,927 votes. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora has managed to secure 12,982 votes.
The counting process commenced at 8 am on Friday under strict security measures, as reported by officials.
Initially, postal ballots were counted, followed by the votes cast via Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Counting is taking place at two designated centers: Dawson Higher Secondary School and Nagaon Government Boys' School, with 14 counting tables set up at each location.
Robust security protocols are in place at both centers, and all candidates along with their political parties have been instructed to obtain permission from the district administration prior to organizing any processions. The primary competition is among Sharma, Bora, and Ajmal, with a total of 15 candidates contesting in this by-election.
The voter turnout for the by-election held on October 6 was recorded at 76.19%. This bypoll was called following the resignation of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who successfully won a seat in the assembly elections from Dispur on a BJP ticket earlier this year.
Despite the ongoing counting, the outcome is not expected to alter the current power dynamics in Parliament.
The Nagaon constituency comprises 19.05 lakh registered voters, including 9.43 lakh women and 50 voters from the third gender, who were eligible to participate across 2,312 polling stations.
