BJP Unveils Development Agenda for Silchar Municipal Corporation Elections

Silchar, Sept 27: On Friday, Dilip Saikia, the president of Assam's BJP, introduced the party's 11-point manifesto, known as 'Sankalpa Patra', for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for October 3. The manifesto aims to transform Silchar into a well-planned, developed, clean, green, and secure urban area with modern civic facilities.

Saikia emphasized that the document, titled Unnata Silchar, Samriddha Assam, encapsulates the aspirations of the local populace and outlines the BJP's commitment to the city's advancement. He mentioned that a committee formed by the party gathered input from residents, ensuring their concerns and expectations were reflected in the manifesto.

He stated, "Our primary focus is the development of Silchar. The city is grappling with various issues such as waterlogging, insufficient drinking water supply, poor road conditions, and traffic congestion. Additionally, there is a pressing need to enhance the road network. Young individuals require coaching facilities for competitive exams, while senior citizens and women need dedicated services and support. All these challenges have been integrated into our development strategy."

Saikia assured that these issues would be tackled in phases, prioritizing them according to urgency and adhering to set timelines. Immediate attention will be given to roads, street lighting, drinking water supply, traffic management, and youth facilities once the Corporation is established.

In response to Congress's assertion that voters would quietly reject the BJP, Saikia remarked that the party is not underestimating the Opposition. He stated, "The Congress and the entire Opposition seem quiet. However, we view Congress as a formidable opponent and are approaching the election with a well-thought-out strategy. We are not complacent, assuming the Opposition is weak."

Regarding funding for the Corporation, Saikia explained that it would be supported through regular government allocations, the 16th Finance Commission, urban development initiatives, and funds from relevant Union ministries. He pointed out that Silchar has not held a civic election since 2015, and the status of funds accumulated or unavailable during that time will need to be assessed.

He added, "Alongside these funding avenues, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a special package of Rs 100 crore for Silchar. The Chief Minister will ensure that this amount is allocated to the Municipal Corporation promptly."

Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai, who oversees the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs (DoHUA) in Assam, remarked that the inaugural election for the Silchar Municipal Corporation would be a significant milestone in the city's civic history. He noted that a team led by Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha crafted the manifesto under the Chief Minister's guidance, showcasing the BJP's dedication to Silchar's planned development.

Voting for the Corporation is set for October 3, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 6.
