Silchar, June 5: The upcoming swearing-in ceremony on Friday will see Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Rai and Patharkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul taking their oaths as ministers, marking a significant moment for Barak Valley with two representatives joining Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s 12-member Council of Ministers. This development has sparked hopes for enhanced focus on the region's developmental needs.
The appointment of these two leaders from southern Assam has stirred considerable interest in Barak Valley, not just for political representation but also as an indication of the region's increasing relevance in the state's development plans. With their voices in the Sarma cabinet, there are heightened expectations that longstanding issues related to connectivity, welfare services, rural infrastructure, and administrative efficiency will gain more attention in policy discussions.
Prior to the ceremony, both Rai and Paul expressed their appreciation to Chief Minister Sarma for his trust in them and committed to working towards elevating Assam's status among the leading states in the country.
Kaushik Rai, who previously managed the portfolios of Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Mines and Minerals, and Barak Valley Development, stated that he is open to any departmental responsibilities assigned to him. He emphasized his commitment to transparent governance from the outset.
“I will fulfill any duty entrusted to me with dedication and efficiency. I am not concerned about specific departments,” Rai remarked, highlighting the BJP's strong electoral showing in Barak Valley, where the party won nine out of ten Assembly seats. Analysts view the appointment of two ministers from this region as a recognition of its growing electoral importance within the BJP's strategy in Assam.
Rai's return to the cabinet is also significant for development. During his last term, he played a crucial role in establishing the Assam Secretariat in Barak Valley and advancing various infrastructure, education, and governance projects in the Lakhipur constituency.
Patharkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul, who previously oversaw the Public Works Department (PMGSY), Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Veterinary portfolios, echoed that the allocation of portfolios is solely at the discretion of the Chief Minister.
“I will execute whatever responsibilities the Chief Minister assigns to me with sincerity. I am passionate about serving the people and will continue to do so tirelessly,” Paul stated.
Reflecting on his past achievements, Paul mentioned initiatives that improved nearly 10,000 kilometers of rural roads under PMGSY, efforts to boost fish production, and initiatives to enhance dairy infrastructure, including the Purabi dairy project in Barak Valley. His focus has been on connecting remote villages and enhancing productivity in key sectors.
Paul expressed gratitude to the residents of Patharkandi for their continued support, which motivates him to serve. His return to the ministry is being closely monitored in Sribhumi district, especially regarding his recent actions addressing the poor conditions of National Highways in the border area.
During his previous term, significant developments occurred, including the foundation stone-laying for an Agriculture College at Patharkandi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
From a political standpoint, the induction of Rai and Paul serves multiple purposes: rewarding electoral success, enhancing Barak Valley's representation in the state's governance, and signaling that southern Assam remains a priority for the BJP's organizational and governance strategies.
For many in the Valley, this development has rekindled hopes for accelerated progress in critical areas such as road infrastructure, flood management, welfare services, institutional development, and administrative decentralization.
