Guwahati, May 11: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, announced on Monday that the NDA administration is dedicated to enhancing the welfare of tea garden workers in the state, with plans to gradually raise their daily wages to Rs 500 in the upcoming years.

Sarma emphasized the initiatives taken by the BJP-led government over the past decade, referring to tea garden workers as essential to Assam's rich 200-year tea heritage.

In a social media post, the Chief Minister stated, “Over the last decade, the NDA Government has focused on the comprehensive development of Assam’s Cha Shramiks, who are integral to our tea legacy. In NDA 3.0, we will further enhance the lives and livelihoods of every Cha Shramik with a phased wage increase to Rs 500.”

Additionally, he pointed out various welfare and educational programs implemented for the tea garden communities.

As per the data released by the Chief Minister’s Office, the Assam government has set up 118 model high schools in tea garden regions from 2021 to 2026 to facilitate better educational access for children of tea workers.

The government aims to establish another 100 model high schools in these areas in a phased approach between 2026 and 2031.

Officials indicated that these initiatives are designed to enhance the socio-economic conditions in tea garden regions by concentrating on education, healthcare, skill development, and livelihood opportunities.

The tea tribe community represents a significant demographic in Assam and is vital to the state's economy, particularly through its contributions to the tea industry, which is one of the largest employment sectors in the region.
