Assam CM's Controversial Beef Remarks Stir Political Reactions Ahead of Elections
Political Turmoil Over Beef Consumption Comments
Recently, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam and a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), made headlines with his statements regarding beef consumption. Just a day before the assembly elections, he clarified that there would be no ban on eating beef, but advised against consuming it in public spaces. This sudden shift in stance has sparked significant controversy, prompting reactions from various political factions.
Interestingly, just a month ago in Jorhat, Sarma had firmly stated that he would not spare those who consume beef. His recent comments have drawn criticism from opposition parties, who are now targeting him for this apparent flip-flop. It's worth noting that beef consumption is common in several northeastern states, including those governed by the BJP.
Sarma's Clarification on Beef Consumption
In his latest remarks, Sarma acknowledged that many Muslims in Assam consume beef and stated, 'We do not prevent them from eating beef. We only request that they consume it within their homes and refrain from doing so in public areas.' He further emphasized that beef should not be eaten within a five-kilometer radius of any temple.
In response to Sarma's comments, Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, took to social media to mockingly suggest, 'Remove the BJP, save the cow!' The Aam Aadmi Party also criticized the BJP, stating, 'Eat beef, but do it at home; we are not stopping you. This is the message from Himanta Biswa Sarma, the poster boy of the BJP. For the BJP, 'Gau Mata' is merely an electoral slogan and a topic for inciting riots.'
Background on Sarma's Stance
Himanta Biswa Sarma has emerged as a vocal proponent of Hindutva in recent years, often aligning with the core issues of the BJP. In a previous interview, he had stated that public consumption of beef could lead to a three-year prison sentence, asserting that he would take action against those who violate this law. It's important to note that the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 does not prohibit beef slaughter; it merely restricts consumption in public venues and events. However, beef remains available for purchase in many local shops.
