Assam Assembly Elections 2026: BJP Poised for a Third Consecutive Victory
BJP's Anticipated Win in Assam
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), appears set to form the government in Assam for the third consecutive time. The fate of 722 candidates contesting across the state's 126 assembly seats will be determined as the electronic voting machines (EVMs) are opened. Vote counting is scheduled for May 4 at 40 counting centers across 35 districts. Preparations for celebrations have already begun at the Assam BJP office, where a red carpet has been laid out, as seen in a circulating video.
Record Voter Turnout
On April 9, the state witnessed a remarkable voter turnout of 85.96%. In terms of candidates, the Congress party fielded the highest number with 99 candidates, while the BJP nominated 90. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has 30 candidates, the NDA ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has 26, and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) has 11. Additionally, the opposition coalition includes the Raijor Dal with 13 candidates, the Assam Jatiya Parishad with 10, the CPI(M) with 3, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference with 2.
Celebrations at Assam BJP Headquarters
A video shared by a news agency shows the Assam BJP headquarters bustling with activity in preparation for counting day. A red carpet is being laid, a large stage is being set up, and banners featuring party leaders are being displayed. There is a strong belief that the BJP may achieve a hat-trick victory, as indicated by exit polls, which has generated significant enthusiasm among party workers eagerly awaiting the counting day.
Security Measures on Counting Day
On counting day, stringent security measures have been implemented in Assam. The counting centers and strong rooms, where the EVMs are stored, will be guarded by 25 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), each comprising around 100 personnel. Additionally, 2 companies are on reserve, and 93 companies of the state police are deployed across various districts. Notable candidates in this election include Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and Raijor Dal leader and MP Akhil Gogoi.
Exit Poll Predictions for Assam
Exit polls across various agencies indicate a clear victory for the NDA in Assam. Most surveys suggest that the NDA will secure a majority. According to Axis My India, the NDA is projected to win between 88 to 100 seats, while the Congress alliance is expected to gain 24 to 36 seats, with others possibly securing 0 to 3 seats. Poll Diary estimates the NDA will achieve 86 to 101 seats, with the Congress alliance obtaining 15 to 26 seats.
Further Exit Poll Insights
The P-Mark exit poll predicts the NDA will win 82 to 94 seats, the Congress alliance 30 to 40 seats, and others 1 to 5 seats. Matrix also shows a strong position for the NDA, estimating 85 to 95 seats, while the Congress alliance may be limited to 25 to 32 seats, with others receiving 6 to 12 seats. The JVC exit poll similarly forecasts the NDA winning between 88 to 101 seats, with the Congress alliance obtaining 23 to 33 seats and others 2 to 5 seats. People's Pulse gives the NDA a slightly lower but still majority estimate of 68 to 72 seats, while the Congress alliance is projected to receive 22 to 26 seats and others around 5 seats.
