Assam's Chief Minister Declares No Need for International Aid Amid Flood Relief Efforts

Guwahati, July 29: As Assam shifts from extensive rescue operations to rehabilitation efforts in areas affected by flooding, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Wednesday that the state does not require international assistance, emphasizing that both the Assam and Central governments are fully capable of managing the situation.
While launching a relief initiative organized by the BJP's Assam unit for families impacted by the floods at the party headquarters, Sarma mentioned that any foreign contributions would need to adhere to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), but reiterated that the government is not soliciting international aid.
"The Government of India and the Government of Assam are fully competent. Should anyone wish to contribute, they must comply with the FCRA regulations. We are not appealing for international aid as it is unnecessary," the Chief Minister remarked.
This relief campaign was initiated based on the recommendations of BJP Assam president Dilip Saikia and complements ongoing relief efforts by party members throughout the state.
Relief supplies have been sent to four of the most severely affected districts: Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat.
The shipment includes approximately 1.8 lakh mekhela sadors for women, 1.8 lakh t-shirts for children and infants, and 1.5 lakh mosquito nets for the impacted families.
Sarma noted that the initiative was entirely funded through donations collected by BJP workers at the grassroots level.
To date, the party has mobilized and distributed relief materials valued at Rs 16 crore, which includes contributions from party members across the state, extending beyond the four most affected districts.
The Chief Minister also revealed that a meeting with banks is scheduled for Thursday to discuss relief measures for borrowers affected by the floods, particularly concerning loan repayments and installments.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman have already instructed banks to engage in discussions on this issue. The State government and the BJP party are committed to serving the people of Assam," he stated.
Although the flood situation has improved due to the lack of rainfall since July 21, Sarma acknowledged that the humanitarian crisis persists due to the extensive damage caused.
"The flooding is receding, but the destruction is so significant that many individuals cannot return home. Houses have been ruined, mud has infiltrated homes, and several areas remain inaccessible due to roads blocked by silt and debris from the hills of Nagaland. The challenges, suffering, and distress continue, and our immediate focus is on alleviating the hardships faced by the affected population," he explained.
He added that the next phase of the government's response will prioritize rehabilitation efforts, which will include organizing medical camps, disposing of deceased livestock, and reconstructing damaged homes.
BJP workers, including ministers, MLAs, and booth-level representatives, will continue to support affected families alongside government agencies, he noted.
Sarma also commended the contributions of NGOs, voluntary organizations, and individual volunteers involved in relief operations, highlighting that many BJP workers who lost their homes have continued to assist flood-affected communities.
"BJP workers will remain prepared to help wherever the government or other organizations are unable to reach," he concluded.
