Guwahati, June 7: As the electoral landscape shifts with upcoming contests, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) convened a significant meeting of its leadership in Guwahati on Sunday to strategize following their recent Assembly election loss.
Led by APCC president Gaurav Gogoi at Rajiv Bhawan, the gathering primarily concentrated on preparations for the forthcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, organizational reforms, and the party's overarching political strategy.
Approximately 30 senior leaders and party officials participated in the discussions.
Before the meeting, Gogoi informed the media that the party is preparing for a series of crucial electoral events in the upcoming year, including by-elections and council elections, while also focusing on enhancing its grassroots presence.
“Previously, APCC representatives traveled to various districts to collect feedback from the public and understand local issues. Today's meeting aims to explore how these insights can be transformed into actionable plans for organizational reform,” Gogoi stated.
He mentioned that the Election Commission is expected to announce the by-elections for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat soon, following the departure of its MP Pradyut Borodloi to the BJP.
Regarding the Congress' approach in this traditionally strong constituency, Gogoi noted that party leaders have already visited both the Nagaon and Morigaon Assembly segments to evaluate the local situation and pinpoint issues impacting voters.
“The public's concerns are becoming increasingly clear. Many are questioning how a government that received such a strong mandate seems to have neglected the populace from the outset. There is rising discontent regarding ministerial appointments, internal conflicts, and syndicate-related matters, which the public is beginning to notice,” he remarked.
In a related note, former Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, en route to the meeting, declared that he would not be a candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.
“I have stated this previously. I have no intention of contesting Lok Sabha elections. My name was mentioned for the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in 2019, but I did not pursue it. This time, there is no question of me seeking or contesting the seat,” Saikia clarified.
Promoting local representation, he added, “It is preferable to nominate a local candidate. My candidacy would be akin to a parachute landing, which I do not desire. I prefer to work within my own area. Even if the party insists, I will request not to be considered.”
Gogoi also criticized the BJP-led government, claiming that the state lacks a coherent plan amid escalating economic difficulties.
“There is no dialogue regarding the youth, who are compelled to leave their homeland in search of jobs and opportunities elsewhere. The distribution of subsidized ration items has been halted, and the prices of domestic LPG and other essential goods have surged,” he added.
Gogoi concluded by stating that the Congress has received a clear message from the populace: they desire a reformed and revitalized party.
