Akhilesh Yadav's Visit to Kolkata: Strengthening the INDIA Alliance
Akhilesh Yadav's Upcoming Meeting with Mamata Banerjee
Akhilesh Yadav, the national president of the Samajwadi Party, is set to arrive in Kolkata on Wednesday, shortly after the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections. He will meet with Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister and leader of the Trinamool Congress. This visit marks the first by a major opposition leader to Bengal following the election results. During a press conference in Kolkata on Tuesday, Banerjee confirmed the meeting, stating that Yadav had requested to come the same day, but she suggested he visit the next day instead.
Strengthening the INDIA Alliance
Mamata Banerjee has indicated that her aim is to bolster the INDIA alliance. Throughout the West Bengal elections, instead of campaigning in person, Akhilesh Yadav actively supported Banerjee through social media. Following the election results, he made several posts on social media platform X, where he labeled the BJP's victory as deceptive, emphasizing that every deceitful triumph has a time limit. In another post, he referenced the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections and the Farrukhabad Lok Sabha elections, alleging misuse of central forces during the counting process.
Political Implications of the Meeting
This meeting between Yadav and Banerjee is viewed as more than just a courtesy call. Political analysts consider it a significant step towards strengthening the INDIA alliance in light of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2027. Senior journalist Rajendra Kumar suggests that the discussions will likely cover the Bengal election results, the alleged misuse of central agencies, and future strategies. Yadav understands the challenges of facing the BJP alone, especially after observing Banerjee's solo campaign and its outcomes.
Akhilesh's Message to Supporters
Yadav's visit also serves to convey a message to party workers and supporters that the opposition is uniting against the BJP. This meeting is deemed crucial for maintaining and strengthening the unity of the INDIA alliance ahead of the 2027 elections. Political experts note that Yadav shares a close relationship with both Banerjee and Stalin, and he has been out of power for the past nine years, during which Banerjee has supported him on several occasions.
Close Ties with Mamata and Stalin
It is believed that Yadav has received ideological support from both Stalin and Banerjee. Notably, Banerjee traveled to Lucknow from Kolkata on February 7, 2022, to support Yadav and even held a public meeting for the Samajwadi Party. In a gesture of alliance, Yadav had also allocated a Lok Sabha seat to the TMC at Banerjee's request, where Lalitesh Tripathi contested after leaving Congress. Now that Banerjee is out of power, Yadav's meeting will reaffirm their relationship, with the understanding that he will stand by her when needed for the INDIA bloc.
