Guwahati, May 21: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has initiated a comprehensive evaluation of its disappointing results in the recent Assam Assembly elections, aiming to devise a long-term strategy to bolster its organizational framework and promote nationalist politics within the state.
The party leader, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, indicated that a thorough analysis of the election outcomes was conducted, focusing on the reasons behind the Opposition coalition's inability to secure the anticipated results against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“Over the past three days, we have engaged in extensive discussions and analyses regarding the election results. We scrutinized the reasons for our lack of success despite the unity among the Opposition and the failure to achieve the expected electoral outcomes,” stated the AJP President on Wednesday.
According to Gogoi, the party has pinpointed various organizational shortcomings and obstacles that hindered its electoral success.
“A significant issue was our inability to expand and fortify our organization as needed. We must effectively communicate our ideology, vision, and nationalist principles to the public,” he remarked following a series of internal discussions.
Gogoi accused the opposition parties of facing numerous challenges during the elections, including what he described as the BJP's “financial influence, intimidation tactics, and beneficiary politics.”
“Several factors contributed to our situation—delimitation, Hindu-Muslim political polarization, financial influence, inducements, and fear tactics. We thoroughly discussed all these elements,” he asserted.
Despite the setback in the Assembly elections, Gogoi emphasized that the AJP remains committed to its regional nationalist agenda, which aims to safeguard Assam's language, culture, identity, and economic interests.
“We are currently formulating both three-year and five-year plans to enhance the party's organization. We are evaluating our limitations and exploring ways to further expand nationalist politics,” he added.
The AJP contested ten seats in alliance with the Congress during the recent state Assembly elections but did not achieve any victories.
Gogoi himself ran for the Khowang Assembly seat in Dibrugarh district but was defeated by the BJP candidate, Chakradhar Gogoi.
The AJP leader also urged the people of Assam to maintain their support while providing constructive feedback to the party.
“We ask the public to continue believing in us and to offer constructive criticism and suggestions. We will remain steadfast in our commitment to self-respect, self-confidence, and Assamese nationalism,” Gogoi concluded.
