Zhang Yiming's Wealth Surge

Zhang Yiming, co-founder of ByteDance, has overtaken Mukesh Ambani in Bloomberg's list of Asia's wealthiest individuals. His net worth has skyrocketed to $92.8 billion, positioning him as the second-richest person in Asia and the wealthiest in China. This significant increase in Zhang's fortune highlights ByteDance's expanding influence, particularly with its popular platforms like TikTok and the AI chatbot Doubao. Since Bloomberg began tracking his wealth in March 2019, which was estimated at $13 billion, Zhang's fortune has grown more than sevenfold, largely due to TikTok's global success. Additionally, Doubao has become China's top AI assistant, boasting over 300 million monthly users. ByteDance is also planning to invest up to $70 billion by 2026 to enhance its AI capabilities and compete with major tech companies.

ByteDance's Valuation Rises

Much of ByteDance's anticipated investment could be supported by approximately $50 billion in profits expected in 2025. Analysts view the company as a strong candidate for a future public offering. Earlier this year, ByteDance restructured its US operations, transferring TikTok's American business to a consortium of US investors led by Oracle, Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based MGX. This move resolved years of regulatory challenges surrounding the platform in the US. Bloomberg had previously applied a 25% risk discount to ByteDance's valuation due to potential legislative actions that could have forced a divestiture of TikTok. However, after the US transaction was finalized and institutional valuations were updated, this discount was reduced to 10% on June 2, adding over $24 billion to Zhang's wealth. Bloomberg's valuation review was based on data from several investment firms, indicating that the company's strong fundamentals remain intact despite US developments.

Contrasting Billionaire Rankings

In Bloomberg's billionaire rankings, Gautam Adani is still the richest individual in Asia with a net worth of $117.4 billion, while Mukesh Ambani is now third with $86.9 billion, placing Zhang Yiming in second. Conversely, Forbes presents a different scenario, ranking Mukesh Ambani as Asia's richest with $89.5 billion, followed by Gautam Adani at $86.3 billion, and Zhang Yiming in third with $69.3 billion. On a global scale, Elon Musk continues to hold the title of the world's richest person with $826.1 billion, followed by Larry Ellison at $296 billion and Larry Page at $295 billion. Among women, Alice Walton ranks as the wealthiest, sitting at 16th overall with a net worth of $120.8 billion.
