New Delhi, April 1: On Wednesday, digital payment systems experienced significant disruptions throughout India, preventing numerous users from successfully completing transactions via UPI platforms.
As reported by Downdetector, a platform that monitors outages, there was a notable increase in complaints during the day, indicating a widespread problem.
The State Bank of India (SBI) was particularly affected, receiving over 500 reports of outages, while UCO Bank had around 40 complaints logged.
In total, reports of UPI-related downtime exceeded 40, with numbers continuing to grow as more users reported issues.
This disruption was not confined to a specific area, as users from major cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and Pune reported failed transactions and payment errors.
For SBI, the outage seemed to be more extensive, with complaints also emerging from Kolkata, Guwahati, and Chennai.
Users of UCO Bank primarily reported issues from New Delhi, Jaipur, and Kolkata.
Many individuals took to X to voice their experiences. While some expressed their frustration over unsuccessful payments, others were uncertain whether the problem lay with their bank or their devices.
Several users noted that transactions were getting stuck midway, and in some instances, UPI applications failed to load entirely.
In response to the situation, SBI announced on social media that a scheduled maintenance activity had been extended until 12:30 PM on April 1.
The bank cautioned that services including UPI, IMPS, YONO, internet banking, NEFT, and RTGS might experience interruptions during this time.
It recommended that customers utilize alternatives such as UPI Lite, the eRupee (CBDC) app, and ATM services while apologizing for the inconvenience.
“The scheduled maintenance activity end timing has been extended to 12:30 Hrs on 01.04.2026,” the public lender stated.
“Our services, UPI, IMPS, YONO, Internet Banking, NEFT, and RTGS, may experience disruptions,” it added.
SBI further explained that customers could use UPI Lite, the eRupee (CBDC) App, and ATM services during this period.
“We regret the inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding,” the public lender concluded.
