Why Are Major Banks Opening on Sunday? Find Out Before the Nationwide Strike!
Public Sector Banks Extend Hours Ahead of Strike
New Delhi: On Sunday, September 27, several public sector banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda (BoB), and Punjab National Bank (PNB), will be open to assist customers with their banking needs. This initiative comes ahead of a planned three-day nationwide bank strike set to occur from September 28 to September 30.
The decision to keep public sector banks (PSBs) and regional rural banks (RRBs) operational on Sunday was made to ensure that customers have access to essential banking services before the strike. Individuals needing to visit a branch for urgent transactions can take advantage of this extra day, depending on the staffing and operational arrangements at their local branches.
This arrangement was established following a meeting on September 21, which included representatives from the Finance Ministry, various public sector banks, regional rural banks, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), and NABARD.
The timing of this decision is crucial, as September 26 and 27 fall on the weekend. Without this Sunday opening, customers would face several days of limited access to bank services due to the impending strike. Therefore, this initiative aims to provide a vital opportunity for customers to complete their banking activities.
Among the banks that will be operational today are SBI, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, PNB, Bank of India, Indian Bank, Union Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, UCO Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, and Punjab & Sind Bank.
Additionally, 28 regional rural banks across the nation will also participate in this arrangement. These include banks such as Andhra Pradesh Grameena Bank, Arunachal Pradesh Rural Bank, Assam Gramin Bank, and many others.
It is important to note that this special Sunday opening does not apply to private sector banks.
This initiative is a proactive measure in light of the upcoming three-day nationwide strike organized by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and other banking unions.
