This week, the stock market is poised for significant movements driven by key quarterly earnings from major companies like Wipro and HCL Tech, alongside crucial inflation data. The upcoming CPI inflation report could either heighten concerns over interest rate hikes or provide temporary relief, depending on its outcome. With the IT sector in focus following TCS's strong performance, investors are eager to see how other firms will fare. As the market navigates these developments, the balance between improving domestic earnings and global risks will be critical.

Market Influencers This Week

In New Delhi, analysts predict that significant quarterly earnings from firms such as Wipro and HCL Tech, alongside inflation data, global market trends, and fluctuations in crude oil prices, will shape stock market dynamics this week.

Investors will also keep an eye on foreign trading activities, the movement of the rupee, US Treasury yields, and geopolitical events.

The upcoming September CPI inflation report is anticipated to be a crucial domestic indicator. A higher-than-expected figure could reignite fears of further tightening by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), potentially impacting sectors sensitive to interest rates, including banking, automobiles, and real estate, while also posing a risk to consumer demand.

Conversely, a lower inflation reading might alleviate concerns regarding peak interest rates, although any relief could be fleeting if Brent crude prices stay above USD 100 per barrel. Additionally, wholesale price inflation data will provide insights into how rising energy and logistics costs are affecting producer prices, according to Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth.

US inflation and retail sales figures are expected to influence Treasury yields and the strength of the dollar.

The IT sector is likely to remain a focal point as HCL Technologies, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra announce their results for the September quarter. Following TCS's better-than-expected earnings, the sector experienced a notable rebound on Friday, but the sustainability of this recovery will depend on the performance and outlook of its peers.

IT stocks played a significant role in the market's recovery last Friday, following a more than 4% surge in TCS shares after its positive quarterly results.

Despite the US suspending eight IT firms, including TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and Microsoft, from a green card application program for foreign workers, Indian IT companies have largely dismissed the news, asserting that it does not impact their workforce strategies.

TCS stated that it does not foresee the US's actions affecting its workforce strategy or client relationships, citing minimal applications under the program in recent years and a focus on local hiring.

This week will also see earnings reports from BHEL, Canara Bank, HDB Financial Services, HDFC Asset Management Company, and Nestle.

Indian equities are expected to stabilize this week as the market weighs improving domestic earnings against heightened global risks. With Brent crude prices remaining above USD 100 per barrel and ongoing foreign institutional investor selling, market sentiment is under pressure. After eight weeks of declines, the Nifty-50 index gained 0.4% last week, indicating some stabilization at lower levels, although the broader market is likely to remain selective.

Domestically, the September CPI and WPI inflation data will be closely monitored for signs of further price pressures, while the second quarter earnings season picks up pace.

Key global data points to watch include US CPI and jobs data, EU CPI, and UK GDP.

Last week, the BSE benchmark Sensex rose by 562.63 points, or 0.78%, while the NSE Nifty increased by 98.5 points, or 0.43%.

As corporate earnings increasingly dictate sector performance, the results from TCS have sparked a rebound in IT stocks, bolstering broader indices. However, crude oil prices remain a significant macroeconomic concern, with uncertainties surrounding Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, and regional energy infrastructure posing risks to global supply stability.
