Uttar Pradesh Government Increases Dearness Allowance for Employees and Pensioners
Uttar Pradesh's DA Increase Announcement
On Thursday, May 21, the Uttar Pradesh government sanctioned a 2% rise in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for its state employees and pensioners. This adjustment will be effective retroactively from January 1, 2026, providing financial support to millions across the state. With this update, the DA will increase from 58% to 60% of the basic salary, bringing Uttar Pradesh in line with other states like Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Bihar, which have also recently implemented similar increases for their workforce and retirees.
The updated DA is anticipated to be reflected in the salaries disbursed in June, enhancing the monthly earnings of state government personnel. Additionally, employees will receive back pay for the period from January to April 2026, which is expected to be credited to their General Provident Fund (GPF) accounts. This decision is projected to benefit around 1.6 million government employees, educators, and pensioners in Uttar Pradesh.
Wider DA Revisions Across Government Sectors
This announcement from Uttar Pradesh is part of a larger trend of DA adjustments across various government sectors. On April 22, the Finance Ministry had approved a similar 2% DA increase for central government employees effective from January 1, 2026. Following this, the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) updated the dearness allowance for bank employees for the months of May, June, and July 2026, which is expected to boost salaries for both workmen and officers across different pay scales. Reports suggest that employees with basic salaries ranging from Rs 48,000 to Rs 1,17,000 could see monthly DA increases between Rs 435 and Rs 1,050. Furthermore, Indian Railways also announced a 2% DA and dearness relief increase on May 13, raising the total DA to 60% from the previous 58%. The Finance Ministry has indicated that separate notifications for Railway and Defence personnel will be issued by their respective departments.
