UPI Users Encounter Payment Issues Amid Scheduled Maintenance
Payment Problems Reported by UPI Users
A number of UPI users have reported difficulties with transactions on their apps, prompting many to voice their concerns on social media platform X. The majority of complaints have come from users of UCO Bank and the State Bank of India (SBI). According to Downdetector, a service that tracks the status of various online platforms, there was a significant increase in complaints, with SBI alone receiving over 500 reports related to payment issues. UCO Bank users also expressed their frustrations, with Downdetector recording more than 50 complaints around 1:00 PM on April 1, 2026, as noted by a financial news outlet.
One user on X tagged SBI, stating, "@TheOfficialSBI @OfficialSBICare your online system has been down since 11 AM, causing significant inconvenience for many customers! Please resolve this quickly! Nowadays, most transactions are done online, and reliance on cash has decreased considerably." Earlier today, SBI announced a change in the timing for its scheduled maintenance, which is now set from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM. The bank advised customers to utilize UPI Lite and ATM services during this time. SBI posted on X, "The timing for our scheduled maintenance has been updated. Services such as UPI, IMPS, YONO, Internet Banking, NEFT, and RTGS may face interruptions between 11:00 and 11:45 AM (IST) on April 1, 2026 (for 45 minutes)." Another user expressed frustration, tweeting, "#SBIfoolsday On April 1st, SBI is playing tricks on customers. I've been trying to send money via UPI since morning, but the server keeps showing it's down."
In response to the rising number of UPI transaction failures, the government has urged banks to collaborate with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to address these issues. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently informed Parliament that UPI represented 81% of all retail digital payments in FY25, establishing it as the largest real-time retail payments system globally.
