Washington, Sep 2: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman engaged in discussions with World Bank President Ajay Banga, focusing on enhancing the collaboration between India and the global financial institution to advance corporate, infrastructure, and municipal bond markets.

The meeting took place during the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting in Asheville on Tuesday.

Sitharaman expressed gratitude for the World Bank Group's ongoing involvement with India and acknowledged the swift processing of the Development Policy Financing (DPF) amounting to USD 1.5 billion, as stated by the Finance Ministry.

She also recognized the International Finance Corporation's (IFC) timely support to MSMEs via SIDBI, which has positively influenced the MSME sector.

The two leaders deliberated on further enhancing the India-World Bank Group partnership, including the potential for a more significant role for MIGA (Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency) in India to deepen corporate, infrastructure, and municipal bond markets through strategic guarantees and increased private capital mobilization.

Additionally, discussions included a sector-focused, programmatic approach to credit enhancement for infrastructure projects.

Banga acknowledged the remarkable transformation in India's infrastructure and highlighted the potential to utilize the World Bank Group's resources to support India's developmental goals, including MIGA's involvement and political risk insurance for Indian firms investing abroad.

Sitharaman also emphasized India's collaboration with the World Bank Group in establishing a Global Digital Public Infrastructure Knowledge Hub in India, aiming to leverage technology in sectors like agriculture, and expressed eagerness for swift progress towards its launch.

Furthermore, the Union Finance Minister discussed the development of globally competitive tourism destinations under the new India-World Bank Group Country Partnership Framework, advocating a coordinated strategy that integrates International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) policy and infrastructure support, IFC investments, and MIGA guarantees.

The two leaders also explored evolving the partnership from a conventional lender-borrower dynamic to a strategic platform for global knowledge sharing, innovation, and mobilization of private capital, combining India's extensive scale and implementation capabilities with the World Bank Group's global expertise and financing tools.
