Stock Market Closures in July 2025: Key Public Holidays Impacting NSE and BSE

Understanding Stock Market Closures

Are you planning your investments or a quick getaway this July? A crucial aspect to consider is the stock market's schedule. With several public holidays across various states in July 2025, it's essential for traders and investors to understand how these dates will affect operations at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

State-Specific Holidays in July

This month includes several state-specific holidays such as Bonalu in Telangana, Martyrs' Day in Jammu & Kashmir, and Kharchi Puja in Tripura. Each of these states will observe their respective public holidays. Additionally, Muharram will be recognized on either July 6 or 7, serving as a gazetted holiday in many regions, which may impact banking operations, particularly in states where it is officially acknowledged.

Muharram Observance

Muharram on July 7

Muharram is a significant month in the Islamic calendar, marked by a sacred observance. In 2025, it is anticipated to fall on Monday, July 7. However, the exact date is contingent upon the sighting of the moon, which signifies the beginning of the Islamic New Year. If the moon is not visible on July 6, the holiday may shift to July 8.

On the day of Muharram, numerous institutions including schools, banks, government offices, and many private businesses will remain closed in most states. It is advisable for individuals to check local news or government announcements the evening prior, as the holiday is officially confirmed only after the moon sighting.

Impact on NSE and BSE

NSE and BSE Trading Schedule

Both the NSE and BSE will not operate on Muharram. This closure will encompass all trading segments, including equity, equity derivatives, SLB (Securities Lending and Borrowing), currency derivatives, and interest rate derivatives. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also be closed during the morning session on Muharram, but trading will resume in the evening from 5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM.

Moreover, the second and fourth Saturdays, July 12 and 26, will be non-working days for banks, although markets and schools may remain open based on state-specific decisions. According to the standard trading calendar, the NSE and BSE are closed every Saturday and Sunday. In July 2025, the following dates will be non-trading days:

Saturdays: July 5, July 12, July 19, and July 26

Sundays: July 6, July 13, July 20, and July 27

This results in a total of eight non-trading days nationally in July, which includes regular weekend closures. No additional public or festival-related trading holidays have been announced for this month.

MCX Trading Schedule

MCX Trading on Muharram

Similar to the NSE and BSE, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will also be closed during the morning trading session on Muharram. However, trading will recommence in the evening from 5:00 PM to 11:30 or 11:55 PM. Traders should be aware that only the evening session will be available for commodity trading on that day.
