SBI's Impressive Financial Performance

The State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest public sector bank, has released its financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2026-27. For the period from July to September 2026, the bank reported a standalone net profit of ₹23,037.95 crore, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 14.28%. In the same quarter last year, the profit was recorded at ₹20,159.67 crore. Additionally, the bank's net interest income (NII) has also seen significant growth.

Net Interest Income Surges by 14.69%

SBI's net interest income rose by 14.69% in the second quarter, reaching ₹49,142.85 crore, compared to ₹42,847 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year. NII represents the difference between the interest earned on loans and the interest paid on deposits.

The bank's interest income also increased, with a year-on-year rise of 10.46%, totaling ₹1,32,018.55 crore for the September quarter.

Factors Behind Profit Growth

The increase in profit can be attributed to improved interest income and a reduction in provisions. In the September quarter, provisions and contingencies decreased by approximately 21.9% year-on-year, amounting to ₹4,216.86 crore. Furthermore, SBI gained a one-time profit from selling a stake in its fund management subsidiary.

According to reports, SBI sold about 6% of its stake in SBI Funds Management through an IPO and pre-IPO placements, resulting in a one-time gain of approximately ₹7,288 crore, which contributed to the quarterly profit.

Improvement in Asset Quality

The results also indicate an improvement in the bank's asset quality. The gross NPA ratio decreased to 1.39% in the September quarter, down from 1.47% in the June quarter. Similarly, the net NPA ratio fell to 0.36%, compared to 0.38% in the previous quarter.

Additionally, the total advances, or loans given by the bank, increased by about 18.2% year-on-year. By the end of September 2026, the bank's total deposits had risen to approximately ₹62.78 lakh crore.

Investor Focus on SBI Shares

Following the quarterly results, investors are keenly observing SBI's shares and the upcoming trading sessions. The growth in profit and net interest income, along with improved asset quality, are critical aspects of the bank's performance. However, it is essential to analyze the bank's regular earnings separately from the one-time gains from the stake sale.

Overall, SBI has reported increases in both profit and net interest income for the September quarter, driven by loan growth, interest income, reduced provisions, and the one-time benefit from the stake sale.
