Major Expansion at Rourkela Steel Plant

Raurkela: The Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has initiated the construction of a 3.2-kilometer reinforced cement concrete (RCC) boundary wall along the Dumerta railway corridor. This development is part of a larger plan to enhance its hot metal production capacity from 4.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 9.8 MTPA, with an estimated investment of Rs 30,000 crore.

The expansion project also includes an 8-kilometer double-line railway connection between RSP and Dumerta railway station, aimed at improving the transportation of raw materials and finished goods. This new railway line is anticipated to alleviate congestion at the Bondamunda junction and enhance logistical operations.

The proposed railway alignment will traverse through Barkani and Dumerta. The construction of the boundary wall has recently commenced, supported by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and local police. Previously, on August 24, 2026, RSP completed a 10.354-kilometer RCC boundary wall, securing approximately 1,200 acres of land in Jharmunda and Barkani. Compensation amounting to over Rs 21.72 crore was disbursed to 524 families who were relocated during this construction phase.

Additionally, 222 individuals were offered contractual employment, while residents from 323 hutments were moved to temporary housing or alternative locations. Infrastructure development is also underway at a site near Deogaon, where roads, electricity, water supply, and drainage facilities are being established to support the relocated families.
