Mumbai, Oct 16: Reliance Industries Ltd (REL) clarified on Friday that the regulations governing satellite communications in India apply uniformly to both domestic and international firms, responding to Elon Musk's recent criticisms regarding the challenges faced by Starlink in the Indian market.
In their official statement, the company expressed, "We embrace competition in the satellite communications sector, including from Starlink."
REL emphasized that all entities, including Jio, are obligated to serve the Indian populace while adhering to the nation's laws and regulations.
“In light of recent comments regarding Reliance and the Indian market, we wish to clarify the facts. Like any Indian business, Reliance has flourished in an environment that encourages both domestic and foreign investment and innovation aimed at enhancing the lives of citizens,” the statement continued.
They also highlighted that the principle of openness is grounded in the rule of law, stating, “As reiterated by the Government of India, the same procedures apply to all applicants, whether Indian or foreign. Jio's satellite services are also pending necessary approvals.”
Reliance further noted, “We have never shied away from competition, viewing it as the ultimate measure of who best serves the customer. Jio entered India's competitive telecom sector in 2016 as a newcomer, starting with zero customers.”
In a decade, Jio has gained the trust of over 530 million users, providing some of the most affordable data and robust digital infrastructure globally.
Starlink has obtained a license to operate satellite communication services in India but still needs security clearances and additional approvals before launching its services commercially.
Recently, Musk criticized billionaire Mukesh Ambani regarding Starlink's entry into India, referring to him as "Dear Prime Minister Ambani" and accusing him of attempting to preserve a monopoly while questioning the potential for Starlink to compete in the market.
In a post on X, Musk addressed Ambani as the "real boss of India" and expressed regret for not recognizing his influence.
"Dear Prime Minister Ambani, Please accept my humble apologies for not realizing that you are the real boss of India," Musk tweeted. "Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete?" he added.
