RBI Updates on Rs 2000 Banknote Exchange and Deposit Procedures
Important Guidelines for Rs 2000 Banknotes
In May 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the discontinuation of the Rs 2000 banknote, providing clear instructions for holders to deposit or exchange their notes. This service was accessible at all bank branches across the nation until October 7, 2023. Additionally, the 19 Issue Offices of the RBI also facilitated the exchange of these banknotes. As of May 19, 2023, the total value of Rs 2000 notes in circulation was approximately Rs 3.56 lakh crore, which has significantly decreased to Rs 5,501 crore by March 31, 2026. According to the RBI, around 98.45% of the Rs 2000 notes that were in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have been returned.
Do you still possess Rs 2000 banknotes? The RBI recently shared updates on social media regarding the status of these notes. They remain legal tender, and individuals can exchange them at the 19 RBI Issue Offices. Alternatively, citizens can send their Rs 2000 notes via India Post to any RBI Issue Office for credit to their accounts. It's important to note that the maximum amount that can be exchanged at one time at these offices is Rs 20,000. Furthermore, for cash deposits exceeding Rs 10,00,000 in a financial year, individuals must provide their PAN as per Rule 159 of the Income Tax Rules, 2026.
