PM Modi Urges States to Enhance Investment Climate and Focus on Local Economic Data
Investment Attraction and Local Economic Data
On June 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on all states to actively pursue investments from international partners by addressing investor concerns promptly and fostering a more favorable business climate. He emphasized the importance of creating district-level GDP estimates, suggesting that localized economic data would better address growth challenges at the grassroots level. This address took place during the 11th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, attended by chief ministers from various states, including those who have recently taken office.
According to members of NITI Aayog, the discussions covered a wide range of topics, including economic growth, energy security, skill development, and social welfare initiatives. An official statement highlighted the significance of this meeting, noting that it was the first occasion where chief ministers from all 28 states participated in the NITI Aayog Governing Council Meeting.
Among the attendees were newly appointed chief ministers such as C Joseph Vijay from Tamil Nadu, Suvendu Adhikari from West Bengal, D K Shivakumar from Karnataka, and V D Satheesan from Kerala. The discussions also touched upon professional skill development and the need for improved support systems for the elderly.
Energy Security and Manufacturing Focus
Energy availability and the growth of manufacturing were central themes during the meeting. Several chief ministers highlighted the necessity of ensuring reliable and affordable power while also expanding renewable energy infrastructure. This issue has become increasingly urgent due to rising fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Participants emphasized the importance of adopting solar energy solutions to lessen reliance on traditional electricity sources. NITI Aayog Vice Chairperson Ashok Kumar Lahiri remarked, “There was extensive discussion on making energy prices competitive and ensuring reliable energy availability. The governing council members also talked about promoting solar energy on rooftops, in residential areas, schools, hospitals, and government buildings to reduce household dependence on grid electricity and manage subsidy issues.”
Emphasis on Women-Led Development
Modi reiterated the government's commitment to women-led development, urging states to enhance opportunities for women's economic involvement. He proposed increasing the number of Lakhpati Didis from 3 crore to 6 crore and stressed the importance of creating a safe environment for women nationwide.
The Prime Minister encouraged states to focus on the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative and develop export-oriented strategies. He also pointed out that defense manufacturing is an emerging sector where India is carving out a unique identity, urging states to create policies that capitalize on the growth opportunities in this area.
States Present Key Development Requests
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy requested the Prime Minister's assistance in expediting approvals for significant projects, including the expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, the Regional Ring Road, a proposed 12-lane expressway connecting Future City with Andhra Pradesh’s Bandar seaport, and new airports in Warangal and Adilabad.
Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah discussed the restoration of statehood, economic conditions, and development pace in the Union Territory, emphasizing the need for ongoing Central support to enhance growth, infrastructure, job creation, and public welfare.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren sought Central backing for a proposed Rs 800 crore initiative to establish a Skill University and a FinTech University. He noted that advancements in artificial intelligence, automation, and green technologies are transforming employment landscapes, necessitating that states prepare youth with skills for future job markets. Soren added that Jharkhand is already expanding training programs in areas like solar technology, EV repair, drone operations, healthcare, and digital services to boost employability and meet the demands of emerging industries.
