Passenger Vehicle Sales in India Surge: What’s Driving the Growth?
Significant Growth in Passenger Vehicle Sales
New Delhi: In August, India's passenger vehicle sales are projected to have increased by approximately 35%, reaching around 450,000 units, largely driven by strong performances from Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra.
The automotive sector is experiencing a positive trend, benefiting from last year's GST rate reduction, tax incentives, and lower repo rates, which have contributed to a favorable market environment as the festive season approaches, according to Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Marketing & Sales at Maruti Suzuki.
Banerjee noted, "The industry is expected to hover around 450,000 units, give or take 2,000 to 3,000 units this August, compared to about 330,000 units last year."
He identified three key factors fueling this growth: the implementation of GST 2.0, the reduction in repo rates leading to lower EMIs, and income tax exemptions for individuals earning up to Rs 12 lakh.
Maruti Suzuki, the market leader, reported a 34.8% increase in domestic sales, totaling 176,971 units last month, up from 131,278 units in the same month last year.
Banerjee also mentioned that the company has approximately 180,000 pending bookings, with the newly launched compact SUV Brezza accounting for 30,000 of those.
Regarding the festive season, he expressed optimism, projecting a 10% growth for the current fiscal year, although he acknowledged that the second half may see a high base effect.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPVL) also reported impressive domestic sales of 65,253 units in August, a 59% increase from 41,001 units in August 2025.
Mahindra & Mahindra experienced a 50% rise in domestic passenger vehicle sales, reaching 59,257 units compared to 39,399 units in the same month last year.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd announced domestic sales of 54,396 units, marking a 23.6% increase from the previous year, with MD & CEO Tarun Garg noting that this figure represents the highest sales for any August.
Kia India reported a remarkable 48.1% growth in wholesales, achieving 29,042 units in August 2026, compared to 19,608 units in the same month last year, marking its best August performance to date.
Atul Sood, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Kia India, stated, "Our strong performance in August reflects the continued trust of our customers and the relevance of our evolving product portfolio."
Additionally, JSW MG Motor India reported a 14% year-on-year increase in wholesales, totaling 7,508 units, while Nissan Motor India saw a staggering 147.5% growth in domestic wholesales, reaching 3,426 units compared to 1,384 units in August of the previous year.
