Oracle's Major Job Cuts Impact 12,000 Employees in India Amid Global Layoffs
Oracle's Global Layoffs
In a significant downsizing move, Oracle has reportedly laid off approximately 30,000 employees worldwide, which constitutes nearly 18% of its total workforce. India has been notably affected, with around 12,000 positions eliminated across various departments. The layoffs span multiple sectors, including cloud services, engineering, product development, and operations. Reports indicate that various teams within India's development centers and support services have been impacted, with some experiencing more severe reductions than others.
While Oracle has not officially disclosed the specifics of the severance packages, employees from the company's India Development Centre in Bengaluru have shared details on social media regarding the compensation being offered. According to these accounts, employees are receiving one month’s salary for each year of service, which includes the 15 days mandated by Indian labor laws plus an additional 15 days from the company.
Additionally, workers are expected to receive one month’s salary as notice pay and an extra two months as an ex-gratia payment. A health insurance coverage worth Rs 20,000 is also included in the severance package. Payments for any unused leave and gratuity will be processed separately, based on gross salary.
Conditions for Severance Pay
However, a significant condition tied to the severance payments has raised alarms among the affected workforce. Full benefits are reportedly contingent upon employees voluntarily resigning and agreeing to the terms amicably. To receive their compensation, employees must sign separation agreements, which are often sent electronically. Reports suggest that not adhering to these conditions could result in the forfeiture of severance benefits, raising concerns about potential legal ramifications.
Moreover, the differences in severance packages between India and the United States have caused frustration among employees. In the US, Oracle has implemented a more structured severance plan, offering four weeks of base pay for the first year of service and an additional week for each subsequent year, capped at 26 weeks. However, even in the US, the package does not seem to include extended healthcare benefits or other perks, and employees may lose unvested stock units upon termination.
Reasons Behind Oracle's Job Cuts
Despite reporting robust financial results, including a 95% increase in net income to $6.13 billion, Oracle is undergoing a significant restructuring initiative. The company has announced a $2.1 billion restructuring plan in its regulatory filing from March 2026. These layoffs are anticipated to generate between $8 billion and $10 billion in cash flow, which will be redirected towards investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure, including data centers and advanced computing systems. Key clients in this sector include OpenAI, Meta Platforms, and Nvidia.
Reports suggest that further layoffs in India may occur within the next month, adding to the uncertainty faced by employees.
