Oracle Implements Major Layoffs in India and Worldwide
Oracle's Layoff Strategy
Oracle, a prominent IT company based in the United States, has recently terminated approximately 12,000 employees in India, with indications of further layoffs anticipated within the next month. Reports indicate that the company, which employs around 30,000 individuals in India, is preparing for another significant reduction in workforce.
In a communication to its staff, Oracle explained that due to certain organizational changes, it was necessary to streamline operations, leading to the unfortunate redundancy of many positions. The company has also introduced a severance package for those who choose to resign voluntarily, offering 15 days' salary for each employee who has been with the company for at least a year, along with one month of unpaid wages until the termination date, leave encashment, gratuity based on eligibility, and pay for a one-month notice period. Additionally, a two-month salary will be provided as a top-up.
Global Impact of Layoffs
Global Employees Take a Hit
On a global scale, Oracle has reportedly laid off around 30,000 employees. The initial cuts affected teams in Revenue and Health Sciences, SaaS and Virtual Operations Services, and the NetSuite India Development Centre. Analysts from TD Cowen predict that the total job cuts could range from 20,000 to 30,000, which represents about 18% of Oracle's total global workforce of 162,000.
The primary motivation behind these layoffs is to generate between $8 billion and $10 billion in cash flow to support Oracle's ambitious investments in AI data centers. According to LinkedIn posts from affected employees, the layoffs primarily impacted the cloud computing and database management sectors. Furthermore, Oracle has allocated an additional $500 million for global restructuring costs, bringing the total restructuring budget to $2.1 billion for the current fiscal year.
In September of the previous year, Oracle entered into a significant $300 billion, five-year cloud computing agreement with OpenAI to enhance ChatGPT and bolster its AI infrastructure.
