Odisha's Textile Sector Attracts Massive Investment: What This Means for Employment

Investment Surge in Odisha's Textile Industry

On Thursday, Odisha welcomed 33 investment proposals totaling ₹7,808 crore in the textiles sector during a dedicated conclave aimed at the apparel industry.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the inaugural O-TEX event and launched two textile and footwear parks equipped with plug-and-play facilities located in Jagatsinghpur and Bhadrak.

The conclave saw participation from over 160 companies, including notable brands such as Page Industries, First Step Baby Wear, KPR Mills, Sportking, Adarsh Knitwear, Anubhav Apparels, Bon & Co, and BL.

Majhi highlighted that these investment proposals could generate approximately 53,300 jobs.

He emphasized the historical significance of Odisha's textile industry, mentioning the traditional cloth-making techniques from western Odisha, the silk from Berhampur, and the renowned tsar from Gajapati and Keonjhar, along with the fine art of Maniabandh, which are recognized nationally.

The Chief Minister stated, "Our government is committed to transforming Odisha into a textile hub by promoting these traditional fabrics. We aim to create over 500,000 jobs in the textile sector and establish five textile and apparel parks over the next ten years."

Majhi noted that Odisha has emerged as a prime destination for investors, with 40% of the nation’s total domestic investment flowing into the state this financial year.

He pointed out that beyond the minerals sector, Odisha is becoming increasingly attractive for investments in textiles and apparel.

The textile industry is poised to provide significant employment opportunities, particularly for individuals in rural and economically disadvantaged areas.

Majhi announced an increase in employment cost subsidies under the Odisha Technical Textile & Apparel Policy 2022, raising the monthly subsidy from ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 for male workers and from ₹6,000 to ₹7,000 for female workers.

He declared that O-TEX will be an annual event showcasing the state's rich handloom heritage and its advancements in modern textiles, apparel, and technical textiles.

The Chief Minister assured investors of comprehensive support, stating that a dedicated task force within the industries department will focus on promoting the sector.

Majhi concluded, "With world-class infrastructure, progressive policies, and a skilled workforce, we are creating unparalleled opportunities for investors and livelihoods for our citizens."

He also engaged in discussions with investors and toured an exhibition held at the conclave venue.
