Odisha's Radio Outreach 90.8 FM: Pioneering Green Energy in Broadcasting
A New Era for Radio Broadcasting in Odisha
Jagatsinghpur: In a significant advancement for eco-friendly broadcasting, Radio Outreach 90.8 FM, located in Srirampur village, has emerged as the first radio station in Odisha to operate entirely on renewable energy. The community radio station has transitioned to solar power for all its operations, including transmitters, studio equipment, and office systems. This transformative change not only reduces its carbon emissions but also sets a precedent for media organizations throughout Odisha and beyond.
Subrat Kumar Pati, the station director, expressed pride in leading this green initiative, stating, “As a community radio serving rural Odisha, we believe in promoting sustainable practices not only through our programming but also in our operational methods.” Established in 2023, Radio Outreach has been a vital platform for local voices, addressing critical issues such as health, education, agriculture, culture, and women's empowerment. The shift to renewable energy aligns seamlessly with its commitment to fostering an equitable and environmentally conscious future.
The implementation of a rooftop solar system has enabled the station to meet all of its daily energy requirements, even during peak summer months, according to the engineers. Environmental advocates and community leaders have lauded this initiative as a benchmark for other community broadcasters. Basant Manjari Das, a local environmentalist, remarked, “This is an extraordinary achievement—it demonstrates that even small media outlets can significantly contribute to climate action.” This milestone reinforces Radio Outreach’s position as a transformative force in media and a model for community-oriented broadcasting.
