Odisha's Ambitious Clean Energy Goals Unveiled at National Summit
Odisha's Vision for Clean Energy by 2047
Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: At the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 held in New Delhi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi unveiled Odisha's ambitious plan to derive 74% of its power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2047, positioning the state as a leader in clean energy within eastern India. The expo saw the state secure investment proposals totaling Rs 1,17,557 crore through 18 memoranda of understanding (MoUs), which promise an additional capacity of 11,742 MW in renewable and emerging clean-energy sectors.
These investments encompass a range of technologies including pumped storage, solar, wind, hybrid renewable energy, battery storage, green hydrogen, and green data centers, marking a pivotal advancement in Odisha's clean-energy transition.
Majhi characterized this development as a landmark achievement for the state's clean-energy goals, expressing readiness to significantly contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a self-reliant India in clean energy. The MoUs were signed following the inauguration of the Odisha Pavilion at Bharat Mandapam by Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, who also opened the Netherlands Pavilion. GRIDCO Managing Director Satya Priya Rath facilitated the MoU exchanges with industry partners in the presence of esteemed guests. The event included an Odisha State Plenary focused on 'Investment Opportunities in the Renewable Energy Sector in Odisha,' attracting over 900 delegates.
During the plenary, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi emphasized Odisha's crucial role in India's clean-energy transition, highlighting its rich natural resources, robust industrial framework, and strategic port facilities as significant factors for attracting investments. He pointed out the extensive opportunities available in renewable energy, energy storage, floating solar, wind power, green hydrogen, and green ammonia, along with the Centre's supportive policies to boost investments in these areas.
The Chief Minister noted that the state aims to fulfill at least 33% of industrial electricity needs through green energy at competitive rates. He encouraged investors to set up clean-energy projects in Odisha, promising a stable policy environment, timely clearances via a single-window system, and enhanced transmission infrastructure ahead of energy generation. The state government is allocating Rs 15,948 crore under the Mukhya Mantri Shakti Bikash Yojana to upgrade and expand the power transmission network. Majhi also mentioned that the ports at Paradip, Dhamra, and Gopalpur present significant opportunities for developing green energy production and export facilities, including projects focused on green hydrogen.
