Protests Lead to Chaos at Delhi-Noida Border

A violent demonstration by factory workers in Noida resulted in significant traffic disruptions at the Delhi border, with reports of stone-throwing, vandalism, and vehicles being set ablaze circulating throughout the day. Tensions escalated as a car was set on fire amid confrontations between the protesters and law enforcement. Additionally, a group of over 100 demonstrators stormed a Maruti service center, causing extensive damage. They vandalized vehicles, broke into the office, and ignited the guard's cabin. Employees expressed their disapproval of the violence, stating, "Solutions should’ve been found through deliberations."

In situations involving riots or violent protests, vehicles can suffer severe damage, including to the body, engine, or even complete destruction by fire. Amid these protests, many vehicle owners are left wondering if their insurance will cover the damages incurred. According to Paras Pasricha, Head of Motor Insurance at a leading insurance platform, "If a vehicle is damaged or destroyed during a protest or riot, it is generally covered under a comprehensive motor insurance policy, which protects against man-made incidents like riots, vandalism, and fire."

"However, those with only basic third-party insurance will not receive compensation for damage to their own vehicles. In these cases, it is essential to file a police report promptly and keep thorough documentation to facilitate a smooth claims process," he added. A comprehensive motor insurance policy includes two components: 'Own Damage (OD) cover' and third-party insurance. Policyholders should verify whether they have comprehensive coverage, as damages from riots fall under the OD section, which is not mandatory but crucial for vehicle protection.

Experts recommend that before submitting any insurance claims, individuals should ensure all procedures are followed and documentation is organized. It is important to note that once a claim is filed, the insurance company will conduct its own investigation, which includes inspecting the damaged vehicle and assessing any prior damages.
