Mumbai Stock Market Update: Sensex and Nifty Show Modest Gains Amid Global Uncertainty
Market Performance Overview
Mumbai: On Wednesday, the key stock indices, Sensex and Nifty, experienced slight increases as investors adopted a cautious approach amidst global market fluctuations and uncertainties surrounding tariffs.
The BSE Sensex, comprising 30 stocks, rose by 63.57 points, or 0.08%, closing at 82,634.48. Throughout the trading session, it reached a peak of 82,784.75 and dipped to a low of 82,342.94.
Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty, which includes 50 stocks, finished 16.25 points, or 0.06%, higher at 25,212.05.
Among the top performers on the Sensex were Mahindra & Mahindra, Tech Mahindra, State Bank of India, Infosys, Adani Ports, and ITC.
Conversely, stocks such as Eternal, Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Bajaj Finance, and Bharat Electronics faced declines.
In the Asian markets, indices like South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225, Shanghai's SSE Composite, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng all closed lower.
European markets displayed mixed results, while US markets mostly ended in the red on Tuesday.
"India's economic outlook remains robust, bolstered by decreasing inflation, lower interest rates, a favorable monsoon, and reduced oil prices. The market has gained momentum due to eight consecutive months of declining inflation. However, investors are balancing optimism with caution as they await Q1 FY26 corporate earnings, which are crucial for the premium-valued stock market," stated Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited.
"Moreover, global sentiment is varied due to tariff issues—exemplified by a 50% duty on copper—and diminishing expectations for a near-term rate cut by the US Federal Reserve due to persistent inflation, contributing to market volatility."
According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 120.47 crore on Tuesday.
The global oil benchmark, Brent crude, saw a slight decline of 0.26%, trading at USD 68.55 per barrel.
On the previous day, the Sensex had increased by 317.45 points, or 0.39%, closing at 82,570.91, while the Nifty rose by 113.50 points, or 0.45%, to reach 25,195.80.
