Mumbai Stock Market Surges Amid GST Council Optimism: What You Need to Know
Market Overview
In Mumbai, the key equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, experienced a positive close on Wednesday, fueled by a surge in metal stocks and positive sentiment surrounding the GST Council meeting.
The BSE Sensex, which consists of 30 shares, rose by 409.83 points, marking a 0.51% increase, to finish at 80,567.71. Throughout the day, it fluctuated between a peak of 80,671.28 and a low of 80,004.60, showcasing a movement of 666.68 points.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty, comprising 50 shares, gained 135.45 points or 0.55%, closing at 24,715.05.
The GST Council is convening in New Delhi for two days to deliberate on potential tax rate reductions to 5% and 18%.
Among the companies listed on the Sensex, Tata Steel saw the most significant increase, soaring by 5.90%. Other notable gainers included Titan, Mahindra & Mahindra, ITC, Eternal, State Bank of India, and Trent.
Conversely, stocks such as Infosys, NTPC, Hindustan Unilever, TCS, Adani Ports, and Bharti Airtel faced declines.
The Indian stock market ended on a high note after a mixed start, buoyed by hopes of a consumption-driven boost from the anticipated GST slab adjustments.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that market sentiment in the short term is closely tied to the GST Council meeting's outcomes, particularly regarding consumption-focused stocks and sectors.
In the Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi index closed positively, while Japan's Nikkei 225, Shanghai's SSE Composite, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng indices all ended lower.
European equity markets were trading higher, while US markets closed lower on Tuesday.
Data from the exchange indicated that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 1,159.48 crore on Tuesday.
Additionally, the global oil benchmark, Brent crude, fell by 1.52% to USD 68.09 per barrel.
On the previous day, the Sensex had dropped by 206.61 points or 0.26%, closing at 80,157.88, while the Nifty decreased by 45.45 points or 0.18%, settling at 24,579.60.
