Mehli Mistry's Departure from RNT Associates

In a notable turn of events for the Tata Group, Mehli Mistry, a long-time associate of Ratan Tata, has stepped down from his role on the board of RNT Associates. Established in 2009, RNT Associates serves as Ratan Tata's family investment office. While Ratan Tata's sisters continue to serve on the board, Mistry's resignation marks a significant change.

In a letter addressed to the board on June 30, Mistry indicated that due to his other commitments, he would resign from his position as director of RNT Associates Pvt. Ltd, effective July 1, 2026. This resignation adds a new layer to the ongoing tensions within the Tata Group, especially amid increasing reports of disagreements regarding the future direction of the conglomerate.

The timing of Mistry's exit is particularly noteworthy, as it coincides with a power struggle within the Tata Group involving Noel Tata and N Chandrasekaran, alongside differing opinions on governance and succession strategies. Many speculate that Mistry's departure could ignite further discussions about the power dynamics within the Tata ecosystem.

Industry experts describe Mistry as a modest individual, known for avoiding controversies and rifts within the Tata Group. His understated demeanor reflects a long-standing relationship with Ratan Tata, characterized by consistency and a lack of public speculation. Currently, Mistry serves on the board of the Tata Education and Development Trust, which is the richest affiliate of Tata Trusts. The board of RNT Associates also includes Ratan Tata's sisters, Shireen Jejeebhoy and Deanna Jejeebhoy, along with Jamsheed Poncha, a senior executive at Tata Sons, and Sidharth Sharma, General Counsel of Tata Sons.
