Meghnad Desai, a prominent economist, author, and member of the House of Lords, has passed away at the age of 84. His death has prompted reflections on his significant contributions to strengthening the relationship between India and the UK, as noted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


In a heartfelt message shared on X, PM Modi expressed his sorrow, stating, 'I am deeply saddened by the loss of Shri Meghnad Desai Ji, a remarkable thinker, writer, and economist. He maintained a strong connection to India and its culture, and his efforts were pivotal in enhancing India-UK relations. I will cherish our conversations and the wisdom he imparted. My condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.'



Meghnad Desai was born in Vadodara, Gujarat, and grew up with two brothers and a sister. He exhibited exceptional academic talent, starting secondary school at just seven years old and completing his matriculation by the age of 14. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Ramnarain Ruia College, affiliated with the University of Mumbai, and later pursued a Master's in Economics from the same institution.


Throughout his academic journey, Desai authored over 200 scholarly articles and contributed a regular column to a British radical weekly. His influential book, 'Marx's Revenge: The Resurgence of Capitalism and the Death of Statist Socialism,' was released in 2002. In addition to his economic analyses, Desai explored cultural biography, notably with his work 'Nehru’s Hero Dilip Kumar In The Life Of India,' which focuses on the iconic Indian actor Dilip Kumar.
