Bhala Chandra Mohanty stands out as a key figure in the industrial sector, serving as the Managing Director of Oriclean Private Limited. Since its inception in 1990, he has successfully transformed a modest operation in Cuttack into a thriving manufacturing enterprise. Under his guidance, Oriclean has established itself as a vital partner for Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), producing essential household products such as Vim, Surf Excel Easy Wash, Sunlight, and Active Wheel. In addition to chemicals, Mohanty has expanded his business interests into food processing, seafood, and logistics. His dedication to enhancing Odisha’s industrial landscape is complemented by his role on the Academic Council of DRIEMS University.
How do you handle supply chain disruptions while working with HUL?
To address supply chain challenges, we ensure we have alternative procurement strategies in place with HUL-approved suppliers, which allows us to maintain a steady flow of raw materials. Our long-standing principal-to-principal (P2P) relationship with HUL, developed over three decades, facilitates smooth coordination and helps us adhere to strict delivery schedules.
Are there plans to diversify into other cleaning products?
Currently, we focus on producing leading home care brands like Surf Excel, Sunlight, Wheel, and Domex. While we remain committed to these established categories, we are actively seeking opportunities for expansion. We are in discussions with HUL and other major companies in the home care sector to explore potential entry into liquid detergents and other innovative cleaning products.
What eco-friendly practices are in place at your manufacturing units?
Our Cuttack facilities adhere to rigorous eco-friendly manufacturing standards that align with global ESG criteria. We have received certifications from esteemed national and international organizations, including BIS, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018. These certifications demonstrate our commitment to quality, environmental stewardship, and occupational health and safety, ensuring responsible production and effective waste management.
What is the status of your new project for sauces and jams?
We have temporarily paused the Rs 88 crore project for sauces, jams, and jellies due to certain technical challenges. However, as part of our growth strategy, we are launching a new unit named ORIBAKE Private Limited, which will focus on producing biscuits and bakery items with a capacity of 4,500 TPA. This project is nearing completion, and we anticipate starting commercial production before the end of the current financial year, while also seeking partnerships with well-known brands.
What has your entrepreneurial journey been like?
My journey as an entrepreneur has been both rewarding and challenging. I view entrepreneurship as a responsibility rather than just a career, and I feel fortunate to have the chance to create and contribute on a larger scale. I chose this path to make a meaningful impact on society while generating value. A true entrepreneur not only builds wealth but also fosters socio-economic development. My advice to newcomers is to embrace the three Ds—Dream, Determination, and Dedication—as they are crucial for achieving long-term success.
