Mumbai, Aug 17: The major stock indices closed lower on Monday, primarily due to selling in the IT and FMCG sectors.

The Sensex dropped by 281.09 points, equivalent to a 0.36 percent decrease, finishing at 77,728.16. Meanwhile, the Nifty index fell by 78.35 points, or 0.32 percent, to end at 24,287.65.

Market analysts noted that the Nifty's immediate resistance level is around 24,400.

"For a positive shift in the near-term outlook, a sustained breakout above 24,400 is essential, which could pave the way for a recovery towards the 24,500–24,600 range," stated one analyst.

"Conversely, the 24,300–24,200 range is now a critical support level. A significant drop below 24,250 could lead to increased selling pressure, potentially pushing the index down to the psychological level of 24,000," the expert added.

Overall, the market is expected to remain volatile.

In contrast, the broader market showed some resilience, with the Nifty MidCap index inching up by 0.05 percent and the Nifty SmallCap index increasing by 0.36 percent.

Among the key Nifty stocks, Infosys, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, and HCL Technologies were the largest detractors, contributing to the decline of the main indices.

Sector-wise, performance varied, with the Nifty IT index being the weakest performer, down nearly 2 percent. On the other hand, the Nifty Metal and Nifty Realty indices posted the most significant gains during the trading session.

Experts indicated that the market's subdued nature was due to a cautious stance from investors, as weakness in major IT stocks countered gains in select metal and real estate shares.

"On the domestic front, bond yields rose following an increase in crude prices and the RBI's decision to expedite the closure of the FCNR(B) deposit window," remarked a market analyst.

"Internationally, a weaker U.S. dollar and softer consumer data have alleviated concerns regarding imminent monetary tightening, thereby enhancing long-term risk appetite," the analyst concluded.
