Mumbai, Oct 24: Analysts highlighted that the macroeconomic landscape continues to pose challenges, particularly with crude oil prices contributing to uncertainty in domestic markets. This past week, Indian equities faced difficulties, with benchmark indices experiencing further declines during a holiday-shortened trading period.
The Nifty 50 and Sensex indices reported weekly drops of around 2.4% and 2.2%, respectively, marking a continuation of their downward trend for four consecutive sessions.
The sell-off was not limited to large-cap stocks; mid-cap and small-cap indices saw even steeper declines as investors opted to reduce their exposure amid growing uncertainty, according to market observers.
As the Nifty 50 closed the week under pressure, it struggled to maintain its earlier recovery after four days of losses. Analysts noted that the short-term technical outlook has weakened due to persistent selling.
Immediate resistance for the Nifty is identified around 22,800, with 23,000 as a further level of resistance. For the Sensex, the immediate support zone is between 72,600 and 72,500.
The broader market faced significant challenges, as concerns over valuations and the unwinding of leveraged positions led to a sharper correction in mid- and small-cap stocks, while large-cap stocks fared relatively better.
In sector performance, the IT sector showed some resilience, recovering from initial selling pressures to end the week largely unchanged, buoyed by improved earnings visibility and renewed investor interest.
Conversely, sectors sensitive to interest rates, including consumer durables, metals, and real estate, experienced the most significant selling pressure as worries about input costs and margins resurfaced.
Brent crude oil prices surged to a six-month high on Friday, with Brent futures climbing 3.1% to close at $6.72 per barrel, the highest level since April 29. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate rose by 3.8% to settle at $3.27 per barrel.
For the week, Brent crude increased by 6.2%, while WTI saw a 2% rise. Analysts warn that ongoing increases in crude prices could elevate energy and transportation costs, dampen consumption, and exert additional pressure on sectors sensitive to oil prices.
