JSW Steel and POSCO Join Forces for Major Steel Plant in Odisha: What You Need to Know
A New Era for Steel Manufacturing in India
New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: In a significant advancement for the Make in India initiative, JSW Steel and POSCO have unveiled plans to create a 50-50 joint venture aimed at constructing a 6 million tonnes per annum integrated steel facility in Odisha, with completion targeted for the end of 2026.
This announcement was shared by Kyunghoon Kim via the social media platform X, just prior to a high-profile summit between India and South Korea.
The initiative is viewed as a pivotal step by a Korean enterprise to bolster India's manufacturing goals under the Make in India campaign.
Kyunghoon Kim stated, "Just before the Summit, a major announcement from Indian and Korean business giants: JSW Steel and POSCO will establish a 50-50 joint venture by end-2026 to set up a 6 MTPA integrated steel plant in Odisha."
He further emphasized, "Another example of a Korean company advancing ‘Make in India.'"
The proposed steel plant is anticipated to enhance domestic production capabilities and foster technological collaboration between Indian and Korean businesses.
This aligns with India's overarching strategy to establish itself as a global manufacturing center while decreasing reliance on imports in critical sectors like steel.
The announcement gains additional importance as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to visit New Delhi today as part of a two-nation tour that also includes Vietnam.
During his visit, President Lee is expected to engage in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking their third face-to-face meeting following previous encounters at international forums.
The summit is likely to emphasize the expansion of cooperation in various sectors, including shipbuilding, maritime industries, artificial intelligence, and defense, while also addressing global energy supply chain challenges arising from ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Officials have indicated that enhancing economic relations and supporting Korean enterprises in India will be key focuses during this visit.
India has become an essential production hub and a rapidly expanding consumer market for South Korean firms, especially in industries such as electronics, automobiles, and heavy machinery.
