Investigation Launched Following Fatal Boiler Explosion at Vedanta Power Plant
FIR Filed Against Vedanta Officials
A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against Anil Agarwal, the chairman of Vedanta Resources Limited, along with manager Devendra Patel and several other officials. This action follows a tragic boiler explosion at the company's power facility in Sakti district, Chhattisgarh, which resulted in the deaths of 20 individuals. The incident has prompted a thorough investigation into potential negligence.
Prafull Thakur, the Superintendent of Police in Sakti, confirmed that the complaint was filed at the Dabhra police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to causing death through negligence and improper machinery handling. Thakur stated, “Eight to ten individuals, including Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal, have been named in the FIR. Additional names may be included if further culpability is established during the investigation.”
The explosion occurred on April 14 at the plant situated in Singhitarai village. Initial investigations revealed that a steel pipe, which was responsible for transporting high-pressure steam from the boiler to the turbine, ruptured, resulting in a significant explosion. In addition to the fatalities, at least 16 workers suffered severe burn injuries.
Preliminary technical evaluations indicate that the incident was caused by an excessive accumulation of fuel within the boiler furnace, leading to abnormal pressure levels and subsequent structural failure. A police statement noted, “An initial report from the Chief Boiler Inspector indicated that the excessive fuel in the furnace created high pressure, which caused the boiler to explode. This pressure displaced a lower pipe from its intended position, resulting in the catastrophic event.”
A forensic examination by the Forensic Science Laboratory in Sakti has supported these conclusions, identifying fuel build-up and pressure increase as the main factors behind the explosion.
Investigation Highlights Maintenance and Safety Issues
Investigators have suggested that failures in maintenance and operational procedures may have significantly contributed to the disaster. Authorities pointed out that both Vedanta and its contractor, NGSL (NTPC GE Power Services Limited), did not adhere to necessary safety and maintenance protocols. “Negligence in maintenance and improper operation led to sudden changes in boiler pressure, ultimately resulting in the accident. Based on the evidence and technical assessments available, negligence has been established prima facie, prompting the filing of the FIR,” the statement concluded.
