Introducing 'Kar Saathi': A New Digital Companion for Taxpayers
Launch of 'Kar Saathi' by the Income Tax Department
The Income Tax Department has unveiled a new platform named 'Kar Saathi', designed to simplify the tax filing process for individuals. This initiative aims to consolidate all information related to Direct Taxes in a single, user-friendly location. According to a recent announcement on social media, the Income Tax India stated that the website is "easier to navigate and quicker to utilize, providing a centralized hub for all Income Tax information." The post further introduced Kar Saathi as an AI-driven assistant to enhance the taxpayer's experience.

Ravi Agarwal, the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), announced the launch last month, indicating that similar services would also be accessible offline. 'Kar Saathi' is part of the larger Policy Reform and Responsible Action for Mission Viksit Bharat (PRARAMBH) initiative, which aims to facilitate a seamless transition to the updated tax framework. The CBDT had notified new rules on March 20 to implement the provisions of the new Income Tax Act.
According to the CBDT Chairman, the number of forms required under the new Income Tax Act 2025 has been significantly reduced from 396 to 190. The government has also introduced new forms that are simplified and standardized to ease compliance for taxpayers. The Ministry of Finance has confirmed that the previous Income Tax Act of 1961 will be repealed on April 1, 2026, although certain transitional provisions will allow for the continuation of proceedings under the old Act to prevent disruptions in ongoing cases.
A notable feature of the new Act is the establishment of a unified "Tax Year," which spans from April 1 to March 31, replacing the previously distinct Financial Year (FY) and Assessment Year (AY). This new timeframe will dictate when income is recognized, recorded, and taxed.
