IndiGo's Strategic Board Appointment

On Thursday, IndiGo, India's leading budget airline, announced the addition of Amitabh Kant, the former CEO of Niti Aayog and India's G20 Sherpa, to its board as a Non-Executive Director. Kant had stepped down from his role as G20 Sherpa just last month.


The airline noted that Kant's appointment is pending regulatory and shareholder approval.


Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of IndiGo's Board of Directors, expressed enthusiasm about Kant joining the board, highlighting his extensive administrative experience both nationally and internationally. Mehta emphasized that Kant's proven leadership in managing large-scale projects will significantly aid IndiGo, particularly as it accelerates its international growth.


With Kant on board, IndiGo aims to utilize his expertise to enhance its growth trajectory and establish itself as a global airline by 2030. Mehta reiterated his excitement about Kant's leadership skills and his history of successful project management.


Amitabh Kant, an IAS officer from the Kerala Cadre of the 1980 batch, boasts a career spanning over four decades. He has held several prominent positions, including Director on the Board of the National Highways Authority of India and Member of India's National Statistical Commission. He has also led significant initiatives such as the expansion of Calicut Airport and the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.


Most recently, Kant served as India's Sherpa to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 Presidency, where he played a crucial role in delivering the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, which focused on addressing global challenges, fostering growth, enhancing India's digital public infrastructure, and promoting ambitious reforms in climate finance, geopolitics, and technology.


Additionally, he has been instrumental in spearheading various large-scale sustainability projects, including the Green Hydrogen Mission and the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage.
